Introduction

In AC voltage control and motor soft starting, a fully controllable device is not always the best answer because load current commutates to zero every half cycle and only turn-on capability is needed. This article covers the latching mechanism of thyristors and TRIACs, the power relationship in phase control, the dual stress of voltage and current rate of rise, and the design essentials of snubber networks and high-speed fusing.

1. 1. The latching mechanism of half-controlled devices

A thyristor is a four-layer semiconductor structure equivalent to two complementary transistors forming a positive feedback loop. Once gate current is injected and the anode current exceeds the latching current, the internal feedback sustains itself, so the device keeps conducting after the gate signal is removed and only turns off when anode current falls below the holding current. That is what half-controlled means: turn-on is controllable, turn-off is not. A TRIAC can be regarded as two antiparallel thyristors integrated on one die with a single gate controlling both directions, at the cost of different trigger sensitivity in the four quadrants, longer turn-off time and weaker rate-of-rise capability than two discrete antiparallel thyristors. The half-controlled nature suits mains-frequency AC exactly: current commutates naturally each half cycle, no forced turn-off is needed, and in exchange the device offers very low on-state voltage, strong surge endurance and low cost per ampere.

2. 2. Phase control and power regulation

Phase control delays the firing instant from the voltage zero crossing by a firing angle; the larger the delay, the shorter the conducting interval each half cycle and the lower the RMS voltage delivered to the load. With a purely resistive load the relationship between RMS output and firing angle is a nonlinear cosine: beyond the midpoint the voltage falls faster than intuition suggests and control resolution degrades. An inductive load behaves quite differently: current does not vanish at voltage zero but keeps flowing for a while, so at large firing angles the current becomes discontinuous and each device conducts only part of its half cycle, while in three-phase systems a device cannot conduct until another phase provides a return path. Soft starters therefore usually start from a small firing angle and advance gradually, holding the gate pulse until anode current is reliably above the latching current to avoid half-wave operation in the very first cycle.

3. 3. Dual stress of voltage and current rate of rise

During the blocking interval the device holds forward voltage, and if the voltage rises too fast the displacement current through the internal junction capacitance acts as gate current and triggers conduction without a gate signal. Phase control creates exactly this stress: the device holds nearly the whole line voltage during the delay interval, and a voltage step appears when another phase fires. Conversely during turn-on, conduction starts near the gate and spreads across the junction, so if current rises too fast it concentrates in the region not yet turned on and overheats it, which is why datasheets list separate critical rates of voltage and current rise, and TRIAC figures are usually markedly lower than thyristor ones. Modern high-immunity devices allow smaller snubbers and in some designs the line inductance alone suffices, but the worst switching instant still has to be measured. Voltage spikes generated when an inductive load is switched off belong to the same class of stress.

4. 4. Sizing the snubber network

The snubber is connected across the device: the capacitor absorbs the voltage step and limits the rate of voltage rise, while the resistor limits the capacitor discharge current at turn-on so it stays below the critical rate of current rise, and damps the ringing formed by line inductance and capacitance. Capacitance usually falls between zero point zero one and one microfarad and resistance between ten and one hundred ohms, and both must be solved together from the actual voltage step and the device limits rather than copied from a reference circuit. Resistor power rating must be estimated from the repeated charge and discharge energy, since undersizing is one of the main field failure causes of snubbers. Stricter requirements call for a polarised snubber with a diode that separates the charge and discharge paths, keeping protection while lowering loss. The side effects are increased off-state leakage and a small continuous loss, which must be weighed against immunity in products sensitive to standby consumption.

5. 5. Gate drive and synchronisation

The gate of a TRIAC floats at the potential of its main terminal and the cathodes of different phases sit at different potentials, so drive must be isolated. Pulse transformers have long been the mainstream solution because they provide isolation and energy in one rugged part, while optically coupled drivers are common at lower power. Trigger sensitivity differs across the four quadrants and the least sensitive one sets the gate current requirement, with insufficient LED current in an optocoupler producing half-wave operation. The synchronisation signal should be derived from the AC line rather than from the device main terminal voltage, otherwise regenerative coupling with the power loop causes trigger runaway and half-wave operation. With inductive loads a narrow pulse may fail because the anode current has not yet reached the latching value, so practice uses a wide pulse held until current is established, or a train of pulses across the conduction window, which also solves the need for overlapping firing signals among phases.

6. 6. Protection, selection and failure boundaries

A thyristor fails faster than an ordinary fuse clears, so a high-speed semiconductor fuse is mandatory to interrupt within the device withstand energy, and the protective device validated by the manufacturer for the required coordination type must be used; substituting an equivalently rated part from another family invalidates the coordination and destroys the devices. Blocking voltage needs generous margin over the peak line voltage because the device sits directly on a distribution system carrying switching and lightning surges, and metal oxide varistors across each device pair and line to line are standard practice. Thermally, on-state voltage is typically only one to one and a half volts, yet loss at high current remains substantial and frequent starting concentrates heat. Finally, it must be clear that an antiparallel pair is not an isolating device: it leaks in the off state and can fail short, so maintenance isolation must rely on an upstream contactor or breaker rather than on the soft starter stop command.
